Some people do take their projects very seriously. That's really awesome jetdoc! Also to throw in my ten cents, freeware in some cases can be as good I think as payware.
Here's Cole's old Lear 23 updated for modern more fuel efficient powerful engines and avionics/automated systems for V11. Being a retired A&P/R&E mechanic, like to modify A/C's and the exultant work of the payware makes it much more difficult. My reason for not buying is a bit different than most. Think the guys making the payware provide superior products at reasonable cost. If an X-Plane release breaks it and the license file allows, a community driven update may ensure longevity.
If it's not to taste, not using it won't hurt anybody. This is less, if any, of a factor with freeware. (Food at least provides something physical and nutritional and maybe an opportunity for social interaction.) So every purchase carries the inherent risk of the add-on not delivering the experience tomorrow that it does today. You can also extend this to the operating system or hardware if so inclined. Neither can developers contractually force Laminar to provide 100% compatibility for add-ons across X-Plane releases, nor can the developers be contractually forced by customers to provide support and compatibility updates for an infinite amount of time and X-Plane releases.
Yes, it's unfair as even $80 per license is much too little to compensate for all the development hours, but don't forget that this is a hobbyist environment. I'm not saying you can't be choosey but never say never. Why does 30 - 80 USD seem too much to pay for quality work - I'm not sure what price a Pizza is in the good old USA but once consumed its gone! One can spend four times that on a family meal.
